Frequently Asked Questions

Engagement Rings

Q1. What is an engagement ring?

A1. An engagement ring is a ring that is given to a woman by her fiancé as "proof of a promise of marriage." The custom is said to have originated in ancient Rome, where rings made of iron were given as a symbol of the promise until marriage.

Q2. Is an engagement ring necessary?

A2. Yes, an engagement ring is necessary. The engagement ring is a precious item that puts a couple's promise to share the rest of their lives together into a tangible form. Rings are the most appropriate adornment for expressing such cherished sentiments in life.

Q3. Does an engagement ring have to be diamonds? Can other gems be used?

A3. There is no rule that an engagement ring must be diamonds. An increasing number of people are choosing birthstones or other favorite gems to express their individuality. Diamonds are the hardest substance found in Nature. Due to diamond's image of permanence and its pure, colorless transparency, it is commonly used in engagement rings to symbolize the vows of eternal love.

Q4. What is the benchmark price range for engagement rings? Is it really 3 months' salary?

A4. There are neither "benchmarks" nor "rules" in budgeting for an engagement ring. "Three months' salary" is advertising copy spread by the industry's marketing strategy. We recommend choosing a ring that can be worn for many years after the ceremony is over. To do so, a certain amount of budgeting is required. You should consider spending at least abut $3,000 (US).

Q5. When can you wear an engagement ring?

A5. We recommend wearing and enjoying the precious engagement ring you receive at all times. However, some ring styles are not suited for everyday wear. Band-type rings do not catch, and the beautiful gems that spread across the width of your finger can be enjoyed on a daily basis.

Q6. What is the best timing for purchasing an engagement ring?

A6. Instead of buying a ready-made ring that is simply resized, we recommend purchasing a ring that is made specifically in the size that is perfect for your finger. Production times may vary by brand or jewelry store, but we recommend that you order your engagement ring at least 2 months before the date that you will need it.

Q7. Why is the engagement ring worn on the left ring finger?

A7. There is a legend that there is a vein that directly connects the ring finger on the left hand to the heart. Others say that the most unused finger is the ring finger on the left hand, making it the ideal finger for rings since they will be least likely to be damaged.

Eternity Rings

Q1. What can I do if my eternity ring no longer fits?

A1. We will make a new ring in the desired size and exchange it. SUWA will exchange rings at no charge for up to 2 years after the initial purchase date. After 2 years, there will be a charge.

Q2. Is it safe to wear an eternity ring every day?

A2. Yes, wear it and enjoy it every day. However, be aware that diamond eternity rings have diamonds set all around the ring, making them delicate pieces. Please refer to the Precautions section.

Wearing Jewelry and Component Materials

Q1. What exactly is meant by "everyday" use? For example, is it safe to wear a ring while bathing, cooking, or doing laundry?

A1. Gemstone jewelry is delicate. Please remove rings while performing daily chores. When using soap and water, such as while bathing or washing dishes, rings become slippery and may come off, making it possible that they go down the drain or become lost. Also, in the case of yellow gold, alloys such as silver and brass may react to some of the components contained in bathing products, which may cause a change in the metal's color. Furthermore, doing garden work or participating in sports involving a strong grip (such as tennis, golf, or baseball), may cause rings to become misshapen, so they should be removed.

Q2. Why is platinum often used for diamond rings?

A2. The white brilliance of diamonds shows off its beauty best when combined with white precious metals. Platinum also has more "grip" than gold, and will hold diamonds firmly in place even after a long time. Finally, platinum will not change color, making it the ideal metal to enhance the beauty of diamonds for a long time.
