Precautions for Everyday Use

Misshapen Rings / Lost Gemstones

Gemstone rings are delicate

Without knowing it, we often put strength in our palms during our everyday lives. When pressure is applied to a ring, it causes the ring to change shape from a circle to an oval, sometimes causing diamonds to fall out.

Please remove rings when engaging in sports that involve a strong grip, such as tennis or golf, or when doing garden work. Care is especially needed with diamond eternity rings, which are set with diamonds all around. Since there is less metal, pressure and impact are more likely to affect them.

Beware of Applause

A fairly common but unknown reason for misshapen rings is applause. When wearing rings on both hands to a sporting event or concert, you may get carried away in enthusiastic applause. The rings can hit each other in the palms, causing damage to the less durable ring. When applauding with rings on both hands, take care to applaud with the fingers of one hand against the palm of the other.

Precious Metal Wear

After years of use

After wearing a ring daily over a long period of time, the metal holding the gemstones in place will gradually wear down from rubbing against surfaces. Continued use in this condition will eventually result in gems coming loose as the setting can no longer hold them in place.

As a general rule, please take your ring in to your authorized SUWA jeweler once a year to check the condition of the setting. Depending on the condition, recommendations will be made for remaking your ring.

Remaking

This normally involves fabricating a new ring, and setting it with the customer's gemstones.

Even in the short term, unforeseen accidents such as breaking a prong by striking the ring against an object may make remaking necessary.
